Getting Creative With Vellum Envelopes

Categorized: Printing | No comments

A long time ago, prepared animal skins were used to make vellum paper. People used vellum for important documents, books or scrolls because it was durable. Vellum documents that are 1000 years old still exist today.

Today, vellum envelopes and paper are made out of plasticized cotton. Although still durable, vellum is valued for versatility and beauty. Because vellum is acid-free and is safe for photos, people who make paper crafts and people who scrapbook love to use vellum in their projects. Vellum will keep photos and keepsakes safe. Photos will not turn yellow and projects last a long time with the use of vellum. Vellum is translucent and is available in many colors as well as several patterns. It comes in a wide variety of sizes, thickness and weights making it ideal for many projects.

There are many ways in which to make envelopes out of vellum even more attractive. Punching shapes out of the envelope allows what is inside the envelope to show through even more (since the vellum is translucent, the paper within the envelope already shows through) making a bright contrast. Glue the punched out shapes onto the paper that will be inside the envelope for added charm. Shape punchers come in a wide variety of shapes such as flowers, hearts, swirls, leaves and stars.

Writing onto the envelope itself gives it an old-world look. Experiment with fonts before you write to see which works best with what is going inside the envelope. Write gently as vellum can tear from the point of the pen or pencil. It is also important to wait until the ink dries since vellum will smudge. Or use patterned stationary and a light-colored envelope so that it shows through softly; the writing should be on the other side of the stationary for this so that it does not interfere with the pattern chosen.

Envelopes of vellum can also be used to give little presents. After a scrapbooking party the host can send each guest home with an envelope filled with pretty pieces of paper, cut-out shapes, ribbons and lace. Baby shower guests can take home an envelope with an instant photo of party guests as well as a home-made bookmark commemorating the event. The items will show through because of the translucence of the envelope. Envelopes can also be stamped with rubber stamps; scissors make a cute embellishment for a scrapbooking party while rubber ducks or baby bottles would look great on an envelope that guests take home from a baby shower.

The cost of envelopes made of vellum is usually relatively inexpensive; 25 envelopes can be found for under $10. With costs like that it is easy to get creative.
