Security Envelopes
Categorized: Printing | No comments
A security envelope differs from the standard type of envelope in that its interior is printed over with a “security tint”. The security tint is a print of clustered dots that resembles the static on a television screen, and is most often available in black and white, or in blue and white.
The purpose of this security tint is simply to conceal the contents within the envelope. Security tint effectively prevents other parties, who are not the addressee, from peering through the envelope’s exterior and reading any text within.
Security envelopes are the ideal choice of envelope for any business purposes. The usual size for business envelopes is nine inches by four and one-eighth inches. To reduce the time and cost of ink consumed when addressing the envelope exterior, security envelopes are also available with the “window” feature. The “window” is a long oval cut in the envelope paper, in the place where the “To” address would ordinarily be written. This feature allows a document to be folded (in thirds, if using eight and a half by eleven inch paper) and tucked into the security envelope with its printed address visible through the “window”. The “window” is preferably shielded with a lining of transparent plastic, to prevent smudging of the address.
Security envelopes may come with either a single window, for the “To” address only. Or, security envelopes may come with dual windows, for both the “To” and “Return” addresses.
There is still further variety available in security envelope options. “Expanding” security envelopes include additional features to accommodate a thicker packet of folded documents. These features may include thicker, stronger paper, an extra large folding flap, or a wider band of adhesive to help the envelope remain closed.
Security envelopes are not limited to the usual business letter size. They are also available in larger sizes to accommodate unfolded eight and a half by eleven inch documents. (Some security envelopes will contain a stack of sixty such unfolded pages or more.)
Large security envelopes often come with the feature of double snaps to close the folding flap, and prevent any of its contents from spilling out. And some security envelopes extend their protection of documents with the additional feature of moisture-resistance. A thin plastic lining that coats the entire interior of the envelope will prevent water damage and keep its contents safe and smudge-free.
A reasonable price estimation for standard envelopes (those being nine inches by four and one-eighth inches and simply featuring the security tint interior) is about $1.50 for a box of twenty-five.
However, as you add features such as single or dual windows, expansion, larger sizes, or moisture resistance, you can expect the price to increase.
