Recycled Envelopes
Categorized: Printing | No comments
Using recycled products is a great way to help the environment. We can reduce energy use, pollution, and the number of trees cut down every year. Recycled paper products are the most common. You can get computer or notebook paper, lunch bags, pencils, paper plates and cups, and envelopes all made out of recycled materials. Many people do not think of envelopes when they think of products made out of recycled paper. Recycled envelopes can be purchased or created. Recycled envelopes that you purchase are usually anywhere from 10-30% recycled material. 100% recycled envelopes are available, but they do tend to cost a little more. These are great if you don’t mind the extra cost. However, in today’s economy, many people do not choose to go this route because they cannot afford the extra pennies. For those who are interested in going green, but also wish to save some green, making your own envelopes out of things around the house is a much more appealing idea. You can make envelopes out of all kinds of things, such as used wrapping paper, junk mail, or used paper. Creativity is key in this type of project. Using things like wrapping paper can add a dramatic flair to your mail, although it is only recommended for personal mail. Newspaper, old magazines or books and junk mail is also great for making envelopes for personal mail. White or brown paper bags or plain white is recommended for business mail or sending out bill payments.
When making your own envelopes, glue sticks are ideal because you can put the glue exactly where you need it with less mess. Ample time for drying should be allowed and they should be tested before being sent out into the postal system. For the more experienced or steady hand, liquid glue, such as Elmer’s School Glue, or rubber cement can also be used for creating your envelopes. Extra care should be used when working with these types of adhesives because they can be messy and you would not want to get any on the mail you insert into that envelope. When using printed materials for your envelopes, you should place blank white labels in the areas where you will write the sending and return addresses so that they are clear and legible for the postal service. For those who choose to purchase recycled envelopes rather than making their own, they cost about the same as traditional envelopes, with only pennies difference.
