Getting your name “out there” is important for all businesses. There are numerous ways to do get your logo or image across. Traditional advertising does not have to be your only tool in your business-marketing arsenal. Giving away a free useful gift could serve as another powerful business advertising method. It may take some money to set up and get going, however it will stay with them much longer than a business card!
Many ideas such as pens, t-shirts, magnets, and other promotional items have been used for ages and work. The key is obviously getting your name and message across and doing so inexpensively, but not cheaply. The reason you do not want to use something that is cheap is its useful lifespan. The longer the useable life your gift has, the more effective it is in continual marketing. If you used golf balls, for example, what happens when someone does not want to get wet after they hit the ball into a pond? You just lost your exposure. A paperweight would last far longer than a golf ball, and anyone with an office or even a desk at home can make use of it!
Another consideration when using unique promotional items to market your business is your target market. If for example, you are in the self-help market you may consider a magnet. A more innovative idea could be a picture frame or shot glass if you want to be less traditional. If your prospects are trying to lose weight, tips on the magnet with your name will keep the refrigerator door closed! Your gift just showed them why they need your service. Magnets are also far less expensive to produce and order when compared to regularly renting ad space.
Another reason to use a gift instead of solely running ads is secondary exposure. How many times have you gone into an office and saw a coffee cup from a local real estate agent? Maybe you visited a friend or relative and saw a season schedule on their refrigerator? You were just exposed to the company’s advertisement! It is still on their refrigerator after the season because it also serves a purpose in holding important papers for them.
Pricing is not the biggest factor when using a gift to advertise when compared to the gift’s effectiveness. Running an ad is obviously a stellar method when you are trying to get in front of your target market, but a gift stays with your prospect far longer.
