Paper shredder recommendations

Categorized: Uncategorized | No comments

Confused by which paper shredder is right for you?  Do you need a compact model or a high security paper shredder? Do you know what questions to ask, or what the answers mean?  If not this quick guide will arm you with the knowledge to make a smart choice.

Now unless you are going to use the shredder very seldom, I would recommend an electric powered type.  You will tire very quickly of having to turn the crank of a hand powered type very quickly. What’s worse is you’ll try to put it off and the pile of paper will grow!  So an electric type is the first recommendation.

Next, what space will you use.  Where are you going to put it and how much shredding capacity are you going to need? Paper shredding machines can be as small as a shoe box or as big as a small filing cabinet.  Some are for desktop use, but others will need a corner of their own.  Obviously if you have lots of paperwork that needs shredded then opt for the bigger type.  There are advantages of the bigger type, one is that you don’t have to empty the “bin” as often and two is that you won’t have to fold the paper to put it into the slot.

One last thing you need to know about is the type of shredding. This is a pretty important point as it determines the security of your shredding.  Quick rules of thumb here is cross-cut is better than strip cut and smaller cross cut bits are better.  By better I mean more secure.  Usually stores will have samples of the style and size of cuts beside the shredders, if not ask if you can run a piece of paper through the demo shredder.

Don’t forget to ask the the sales guy about the warranty and maintenance needs of the models you are interested in. There are industrial paper shredders with 3 or 5 years coverage.  It could make all the difference in the long term.
