Using An Outlet Cover

Categorized: Office Accessories | No comments

A simple outlet cover can save the life of your child. As children grow, they begin to get curious of the world around them. They discover this world by touching, tasting, holding, pulling and pushing things they get interested in. Curiosity is a part of the growing process and comes naturally during the child’s formative years.

However, curiosity has its own rewards as well as dangers. Many children have even been electrocuted – all because of their innocent curiosity. Electrical shock is one of the major causes of fatal accidents in young children. It is now up to you, the parent, to ensure that electrical outlets won’t bring harm to your child.

Many homeowners with young children are aware of the dangers of electric shock and are making their homes safer by installing safety cord covers for electrical outlets. A cord cover is designed to prevent small children from inserting any object into electrical outlets, and avert the risk of electric shock.

Plug-in outlet safety covers can be plugged into an outlet pretty much like an ordinary plug and stays plugged in. This prevents children from getting at outlet openings and sticking various things into them.

Some children don’t give up easily and will try to yank the cover out. You really have to be doubly sure that the plug-in safety cover will be difficult for a child to pull out, but not too difficult for you to use. To eliminate any doubts, it is best to test your own outlets yourself. Better yet, bring one of the outlets into an electrical store for testing. These safety plug-in covers are inexpensive and not hard to install.

There are also safety outlets with sliding covers. While this requires replacing your existing outlet faceplates, this is a more reliable and advanced solution. A good example is the kidco outlet universal cover which works well on both Decora and Standard electrical outlets.

When the plug is removed from the outlet, a spring automatically slides the safety cover plate in position to cover the outlet. Apart from deterring the child from sticking objects into the outlet, the device also prevents electric shock if the child accidentally pulled the plug that’s already in the wall outlet. During such situation, the safety cover automatically slides into place.

This device is more difficult to mount and has a higher price tag than your standard outlet duplex outlet covers. However, price is definitely the least of your concern when it comes to your child’s safety.
