Are you growing tired of having to get your mail on your mailbox? If that is the case, then it is time that you consider installing a mail slot. Also referred as a letterbox, the slot is typically installed in front of the door for easy access. The great thing about having a letter box installed at your door is that you do not have to dress up or go out of the house just to get your mail. In addition to that, installing this type of mail box is relatively easy to do.
Of course, like any other home purchases, it is imperative that you decide what kind of slot you want to install on your door. Slots for mail come in an assortment of finishes, styles, and designs. That said, you have to choose one that will satisfy your taste and door installation requirements. Good news is that, most wall mail organizers sold in the market today come in standard sizes. Hence, they will surely fit in doors of all sorts. You can choose from many appealing options like the mail brass slot, mail antique slot, mail hood letter box, and others. After you have acquired your mail plate, what’s next?
Once you have procured the letter box, next thing to do is to figure out where you want to install it. It is advised that you place the slot at the appropriate height – not too high or too low – to avoid damaging the letter, mail, or parcels that will be dropped in it. In addition to that, you have to ensure that the mailman will be able to conveniently access the letter slot.
You also have to consider the type of door that you have when installing the mailbox slot. For those with wooden doors, you can practically install the slot anywhere you want. Meanwhile, those with paneled doors must install the slot in a sturdy, durable and non-paneled door part to ascertain that it will be properly secured in place.
Before you begin the installation, it would be a good idea to hold the letterbox slot against the door so you can visualize how it would look once installed. If you have already pinpointed the best location for your letterbox slot, get a pencil and mark that position. The use of a tape measure will also help you find the door’s center and determine the most desirable height to place the slot. After which, you should get the measurement of the inner flap of the slot so you know where you should create the hole.
When all the needed measurements have been acquired, start drilling holes for the slot’s screws and then begin cutting the hole for the flap. Once done, sand the hole’s edges to smooth them out. Insert the slot and then begin screwing it in place. Be sure to use all the screws that came with the package. Tighten the screws and lugs to secure the slot in place, and voila, you now have a functional hanging mail organizer installed at your front door.
